Why blog, you ask? Blogging is a great creative exercise! You don’t even have to be a writer to own a blog. Everyone who has something to say and information to share can own a blog, and there’s something so rewarding about seeing your thoughts and words published in your little corner of the worldwide web and having other people read them.
When you have a personal blog, you are required to keep it updated. Thus, you are required to blog as often as necessary, which is a good thing because blogging improves your writing. The more often you blog, the better you become at stringing your words together to get your message across. It helps with your thought process and makes you reflect on topics you wouldn’t normally reflect on. Blogging will help you find your voice and define your style in writing. It makes you want to learn new things so you can write more engaging and more informative posts.
Blogging can help you reach out to more people and build an audience. Also, because most blogging platforms are free, you can also promote your skills or your brand at the same time. Your blog can even generate income for you in the long run!
What should you write about?
There are so many things that you can write about in your personal blog. The best advice is to write what you know. Write about topics you enjoy and topics you like to read about. Write about your skills and expertise. Write for your target audience and future clients.
How do you get started?
The first thing you need to do when creating a personal blog is select a blog host. You can do so much with free blogging platforms like WordPress, Blogger, and Tumblr, even if you’re just starting out. They’re very user-friendly. What’s great about these blog hosts is that they are quite simple and easy to navigate. Even non-techie people can sign up and create a blog in minutes.
If you want to sign up for a WordPress blog, just head over to WordPress.com and click on the Create Website button. The next page will ask you to type in your preferred site name and will inform you whether the name is still available or not. Your blog’s URL will look something like yourname.wordpress.com.
Next, you will have to fill in the form with your name, email address, username, and password. Then for the fun part: you can now choose a theme! You can go crazy with themes and plug-ins later on. There are thousands available depending on the kind of blog that you have. After completing this step, you’re done. You have successfully created a blog!
