Tip #3: Using Colors to Engage in Math

Technology provides new opportunities for learners to interact and solve mathematical problems to their individual needs. Specifically, as schools embrace a personalized learning environment, the digital tools that Kami provide in math go beyond student engagement.

This month, our third Kami Hero blog post is from Kristen San Filippo, a math teacher from Locust Valley High School in New York. Continue reading to learn how she uses Kami tools to mix colors and shapes with visual math concepts.

 


How have you helped others work with Kami?

I have trained my students and fellow colleagues on how to use Kami and integrate it into Google Classroom. I also post videos of my review sheets using Kami.

Kami has really made a difference in students willingness to attempt a problem without fear of getting it wrong.  Kami provides them the ability to make mistakes, erase and try again.  One of my favorite quotes is “Mistakes are proof you are trying!”  Kami helps me promote that message.

What are your favorite Kami tools?

I love the Highlight tool (and so do my students), the ‘Insert Line’ option under the Shapes tool and the ‘Insert Image’ option.

If you had other superpowers, what would it be and why?

My educational superpower would be the ability to give confidence in mathematics. That is what holds most students back from improving in math class. My everyday superpower would be a healing power. This power would give me the opportunity to heal everyone

 

Show us how you use Kami 💡

Each day, I push out a worksheet to my students via Google Classroom. I use the Kami assignment to send it to them. During the class period, they fill out their worksheet using Kami.  They LOVE it!  It gives them the opportunity to make mistakes without the fear of not being able to make an easy change.  It also gives them an opportunity to highlight important information for the problem they are solving.

Here are two examples of student work.  The first example is from a 9th grade Algebra 1 course.  The second is from an IB Math SL course.  Here, they use to use the Drawing tool to use color and write their answers. I also have the students use Kami for their homework assignments! They open a blank grid page and do their textbook homework on it.

In the future, I plan on having the students app smash with Kami, Nimbus, and FlipGrid.  I will have them make instructional videos of math topics and post them on FlipGrid for sharing purposes.
