Kami Facilitates Convenient Note-taking for University Students

“Fast and easy. Kami is the best option for Chromebooks.”
– Nicholas Lougheed, Physical Therapy Student, Nova Southeastern University

Challenge: Students need to take down notes in order to keep up with lessons. Sometimes notes have to be inputted on the PDF document itself. The challenge is how to make the PDF documents editable, particularly when using Chromebooks.

Solution: An application has to be installed to address this problem.

Benefits: Kami makes it possible for a student to View Files, Add Text, and Save to Drive whenever using his or her device.

About the University

Nova Southeastern University (NSU) was first established as Nova University of Advanced Technology in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The institution championed the fields of the physical and social sciences in the 1960s. Since then, it has undergone considerable growth. More programs were added in the following decades, including law, education, psychology, business, oceanography, engineering, and computing.

Meanwhile, Southeastern University of the Health Sciences was also developing its own system. The university hosted the best colleges where one could get a medical degree, including pharmacy, allied health, medical science, dental medicine, and optometry.

In 1994, a merger of the two institutions formed what is now known as Nova Southeastern University. The campus has significantly expanded. It is recognized as the 9th largest non-profit, independent university in America. It also prides itself as one of the leading research institutions in the south. NSU caters to undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students. In addition to that, it also has professional and certificate programs.

NSU’s regional campuses are located in Fort Myers, Jacksonville, Orlando, Miramar, Tampa, Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale-Davie, The Bahamas and Puerto Rico.

The Challenge of PDF Note-Taking for College Students

Every student who’s at a tertiary level understands the importance of writing notes. However, every student has a different way of taking notes. Some like to do the old-school method, using pen and paper, while others prefer typing on a computer. There are also instances wherein notes have to be directly inputted on a PDF. This is a challenge for many students. Most of the time, it is not possible to edit PDF documents. There should be an application that addresses this problem.

Kami for Convenient Note-Taking

Kami is an app that allows users to view PDF documents. It has an Add Text function that makes it possible to type notes on the PDF itself. This is a great help for students who read PDFs on a regular basis. Consider, for example, student Nicholas Lougheed. He is doing post-graduate studies in physical therapy at Nova Southeastern University. Lougheed needs to put annotations on his PDFs while he’s in class. He then saves the file in the cloud so that it is accessible to other apps, such as Drive and Gmail.

He currently uses Kami on his Chromebook. Instead of Windows, a Chromebook runs on Google Chrome’s operating system. Most of the applications and documents used on this laptop are in the cloud. This means that the computer has to be connected to the Internet. As a result, Chromebooks don’t have a lot of onboard memory. Chromebooks are best used with Google apps, such as Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Calendar. These apps can be found in the Chromestore. Kami can be found there as well.

NSU uses technology to foster an environment where students can excel. They adhere to both traditional and non-traditional methods of educating. In this regard, their students are allowed to use laptops or Chromebooks as an alternative to using printed materials.

Benefits of Using Kami

It is a common practice nowadays to add notes directly on reading materials. Readings are oftentimes distributed in PDF documents, which is convenient for students. PDFs can be saved on the students’ hardware of choice such as a smartphone, a laptop, or a Chromebook.

Like printed materials, students sometimes need to write on the document itself. These inputted texts can be information told by the teacher during class or personal comments. This can all be made possible through Kami. Students can view files, add text, and save to drive without any problem. Some students also want to pay particular attention to a specific part of a PDF document either by underlining or highlighting it. This can also be done with Kami.
