How to Cope with a Job You Hate

How to Cope with a Job You Hate

At some point, all of us have experienced the misery of working on a job that sapped us of all the joy in the world. It’s not the greatest feeling, especially if you want so much to quit but you cannot because of the realities of life. However, the good news is that you can survive a job that you hate and make the best out of a bad situation.

Vent as Often as Possible

There’s no quicker way to feel better than having a nice, long scream, only not in the office or in public. You can do it inside your car, inside the elevator, or any place where no one can hear you. If you want something less scandalous, you can opt to participate in online forums. You’ll be surprised to know that most people there have it worse than you. It may even help you get a different perspective about your job.

Add Something Fun to Your Workday

Everybody needs to destress. Even your most hardworking colleagues spend time doing something fun to release the tension. Create diversions within the day to break the monotony and to let off steam. Play some of your favorite songs, or have a bite of your favorite dessert. Talk to a friend and have a laugh. Do anything that can quickly improve your mood.

Look Forward to Your Life Outside the Office

Remind yourself that there are great things waiting for you at the end of the day. Think about that relaxing run you will have on the beach. Be excited about the new episode of The Blacklist, which you’ll be watching later with your honey (or not) while eating your favorite cheese pizza. Look forward to that relaxing bubble bath and sleeping on your brand-new sheets. You will instantly feel better.

Take Care of Your Job and Your Reputation

Despite feeling everything but love for your job, what you do at the office and how you perform your job will still reflect on you as an employee. Be careful about people you talk to or people you talk about. It might put you in a bad light. It’s alright to complain once in a while, but make sure that it’s all good-natured and in the spirit of fun or positivity.

Take on a New and Different Project

Maybe you’ve been working the same job for the past three years. You’ve been doing it for so long that you can do it even with your eyes closed. Stir things up a bit by asking your boss for a different project or assignment. Maybe you can try field work or you can work with a new department. Maybe you can even work from home.

Never lose your sense of humor. When everything seems too much to handle and nothing seems to be going right, have a good laugh. It may not be a lot, but it’s guaranteed to make you feel better even for just a little while. Remember that you’re not the only person feeling this way. This is just for the time being until the situation changes, and until you find a job that will give you so much joy you wouldn’t even believe it.
