November is National Novel Writing Month, which has people from all over the United States feverishly writing to complete a novel by the end of the month. National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is a fun new approach to creative writing. The project started in July 1999 with 21 participants, and by 2010, over 200,000 people had taken part and written over 2.8 billion words. Starting November 1, participants begin working towards the goal of writing a 50,000-word novel by 11:59 PM on November 30.
Star Academy in San Rafael is one of the many schools working hard to get their novels completed by the end of November!
Star Academy is a recognized leader in education for Bay Area special needs students. These students are working incredibly hard to get their novels completed and are currently in the planning process for their novels, and setting personal goals for how many words they would like to reach by the end of the month. The planning process for the students comes in the form of Plot Rollercoasters, worksheets that have been sent to each student online by the academy’s writing specialists for them to fill out digitally. There are about 40 students grades 6 through 12 who are using Kami to do this.
Paper management and writing used to be a challenge for students at Star Academy. Traditional writing is not always the best method of written production for the students who need some alternatives to writing with pen and paper. This is where being able to type was a huge benefit to students, who can now fill worksheets in Kami using the add txt tool. Paper management is something that is also difficult for their students. Star Academy wants to move everything to the cloud and ultimately go paperless. For those students who struggle with reading or typing, Kami’s text to speech tool and voice annotation tools have been a huge help. For these and many other reasons, they are moving to a digital platform and digital storage; Kami is making this possible for them.
NaNoWriMo isn’t limited to students in the classroom — anyone can join. To get started, head to the NaNoWriMo website to find out more about how it works. There you can fill out your writer’s profile and connect with other like-minded creatives. NaNoWriMo believes in the power of creativity. They can provide the structure, community, and encouragement to help people find their voices, achieve creative goals, and build new worlds both on and off the page.
Get inspired and get writing!
