Words are powerful. Your words have the power to make or break you. Unfortunately, not everybody is aware that your words can greatly impact your workplace success. If you want to be successful in your chosen field, these are the five things that you should never, ever say at work.
“That’s not my job.”
No matter what the circumstances are, these words just sound plain negative. Any employee who says this sounds lazy, unpleasant, and unmotivated. The work may not be in your job description, but there’s a more proper way of saying this than one that makes you sound like you lack initiative and don’t want to go the extra mile. If you get assigned something that you don’t normally do, instead of saying, “That’s not my job,” put a positive and more helpful spin to it: “I’ll try to help as much as I can. Which one of my current tasks would you want me to put on hold while I finish this?” sounds proactive enough and not in the least bit like a complaint.
These are the two simple words of a quitter. Quitters will never be successful. Saying this makes it seem like you’re just so ready to quit instead of finding other alternatives to achieve a goal. If you want to be successful, you must train yourself to be an effective problem solver. Seek solutions rather than going the easy route of throwing in the towel.
“That’s not how we do things around here.”
These are words of someone who despises change and innovation. Change and innovation can lead to success. If nothing ever changed, how can you expect to have progress? You like to stick to tradition; that’s perfectly alright. However, you also need to embrace change and be flexible and open-minded. You must allow people to think out of the box and demonstrate their creative thinking.
“I don’t have time.”
There’s no such thing as no time. If it matters to you, you will make the time. Saying you have no time is just another way of saying you don’t want to do it. There may not be enough hours in a day to accomplish everything. However, this is where your time management skills can be put to good use. Plot everything down in your organizer or calendar so you know what you have lined up for the day. It’s much easier to see everything listed down so you can easily follow a schedule.
“I don’t take vacations.”
Vacations are a must. Not taking a vacation does not mean you’re the most hardworking and most dedicated person in the company. It just sends out the message that you don’t value R&R, as well as the importance of reenergizing the body and the mind. Not taking a break can take a toll on the body. It can leave you feeling exhausted mentally and physically. To function well at work, you must recharge the body, build up stamina, and keep the creative juices flowing. If the CEOs and big bosses of major companies can take time out to relax and unwind, surely you can make some time for yourself, too.
