We are in the age of technological advancement. Everything is adapting to the various developments in science and technology. Even teaching methods are changing based on the available technology. Educators are now figuring out ways to use these to better facilitate learning among students.
Trends in education are making use of technology in fun and innovative ways. The focus now is to build skills that are suited for the 21st century. Students are shaped to become better equipped to use whatever they have at their disposal to further their education.
Here are five emerging trends for innovative tech in education:
Cloud computing makes use of tools that are found online. School-related files no longer have to be found on individual devices; instead, they are on a “cloud” that can be accessed through the Internet. This allows for easy access by teachers and students at any given time or place. Files, readings, assignments, and other materials are now comfortably within reach.
Utilizing the cloud also makes storing and sharing files, collaboration with other students, and making use of applications easier. The more commonly used cloud computing devices are Dropbox and Google Drive.
Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
Ideally, schools should be able to support a one-to-one student-to-equipment ratio. Unfortunately, this is not realistic for all institutions due to financial constraints, which is why there have been initiatives to encourage students to bring their own laptops, tablets, and other devices to school. Not only does this minimize costs for schools, but it also allows for the use of new forms of teaching. BYOD policies open the doors for teachers to include mobile devices, tablets, and applications in designing educational plans for students that are more entertaining and participatory.
Everybody nowadays has mobile devices such as tablets, smartphones, and other gadgets. What better way to make full use of these devices than by adapting them for use as educational tools. They are portable, easy to acquire, and are already used by many students in everyday life.
Seeing this as a wonderful opportunity for alternative teaching methods, educators have developed different applications and software that are compatible with mobile devices. This now presents new and exciting ways to engage students in class through fun-filled and easy-to-understand activities. Moreover, e-books, interactive textbooks, and other materials have also been optimized for mobile devices.
Learning analytics makes use of different data analysis techniques in order to gather information about students’ learning processes. Schools now make use of mobile devices, applications, and other software as mediums of instruction. These have become opportunities to easily collect data about students’ learning preferences and disabilities.
Reading this data allows for the creation of personalized learning programs that will capture students’ attention and keep them interested in learning. The data may also be used to improve and correct the software and programs used.
Social Learning Networks
Social media platforms such as Facebook and Google+ are no longer just for socializing. They can also be used by teachers to facilitate discussions, post assignments, or upload files through Internet-based means. Collaborating with students regarding classroom content becomes an easy task. Students can also create online portfolios and resumes that can be shared with their peers for better learning opportunities.
