Do you need to write something, but nothing’s happening? Have you been staring at that beautiful sunset for hours, but still nothing stirs your imagination? It’s every freelancer’s nightmare, and it is not as uncommon as you think. Even the most experienced of the lot go through lulls with creativity. The good news is that you can avoid these frustrating creativity lulls. If you are feeling uninspired and burnt out, it’s time to get yourself out of that rut. Here’s how you can start being creative on demand.
Keep an idea notebook
Make sure that you have it with you at all times, because you never know when an idea will hit or when inspiration will strike. Jot down words and ideas. They could be scenes that would work in your novel, lines that would be your song’s chorus, or a unique ingredient for the new dish you are cooking up. Keep everything in your notebook, and you can just go back to them anytime you are in need of some fresh new ideas.
Know which part of the day you are most productive
If you’re not a morning person, don’t write in the morning. You’d only accomplish drinking five cups of coffee but no real work. Instead, plan your day accordingly. Do your favorite flow activities before starting work. They will get your blood pumping and put you in a more invigorated and active state of mind.
Feed your brain
If you don’t exercise your brain enough, it will be a lot harder to get bright and fresh ideas. Read good books. Watch thought-provoking films. Have stimulating conversations. Engage in adrenaline-fueled activities. Stimulate the brain often enough, and it will not disappoint you when the real work needs to get done.
Get out there
See the world. Learn new things. Taste new dishes. Talk to friends. Befriend strangers. You cannot expect inspiration to strike if you are holed up in your room day in and day out.
Get some much-needed downtime
Some of the best ideas come to you while shampooing your hair in the shower or driving on the freeway, or even in your sleep. It’s so hard to be or feel creative when stress surrounds you. When you’re tired all the time, you don’t have much energy left to generate new ideas. Make sure you get enough sleep.
Inject some humor into your life
Sometimes, you have to take yourself a little less seriously. Being silly from time to time can do wonders for your thought processes. Have a good laugh and release the tension.
